STATEN ISLAND, NY – MIDLAND BEACH – If a youngster heard that an organized kickball game was taking place in July and August, images of summer school might creep in.
But that’s far from the case when anywhere from 20 to 30 children and young teenagers gather each Saturday on the soccer field along Father Capodanno Boulevard in Midland Beach.
“People like kickball. They love to play it, and it’s active and it’s fun,” said Greg Lalor, organizer of the co-ed kickball league.
His son Jake, 10, came to him during the summer and said he missed playing the sport, so Lalor, with the help of Greg Janvier, executive director of the United Sports Youth League’s (USYL) Staten Island region, acquired weekly permits at the public field.
Most games run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and children ages 5 to 14 can participate, according to the USYL Web site.
